The Essen Light Weeks create a magical atmosphere through the centre of the unofficial capital of the Ruhr Metropolis. Many motifs bring light into the darkest period of winter.

Generally presenting a multi-facetted picture of a particular partner country under the motto of “Europe in Essen”, each year a different European nation is chosen.

Combined with the Christmas Market, which runs parallel for several weeks during the Light Weeks, this impressive project attracts people from near and far. People go about their everyday lives along the streets or partake of a Christmas delight, while above their heads bright displays light their way.
